There was no great master plan in place when we set out on our journey to "balance" our corporate/working lives with the travel/volunteer work we found to be so personally fulfilling.  For various reasons we landed on two organizations that bracket the types of non profit groups doing international volunteer work. The first being the large, well known and easily recognized brand of Habitat for Humanity (Habitat.org) and the other being a small, highly effective foundation - the American Foundation for Children with AIDS  ("AFCA" - www.afcaids.org).

There are two additional organizations which have also become a core of our focus, and both are a bit different than the other two.  One is a Tibetan Buddhist Nunnery located in a remote mountain region of Nepal.  Rather than being an organization based in the west that does international philanthropic work, the nunnery is a most gracious host of teams we lead, and has become a second home for us.   The other is a small Nepalese based NGO that we partner with when taking teams to the nunnery - the Himalayan Guge Organization.  These relationships have been forged over many hundred cups of tea . . . literally!

We embrace the Habitat model and are drawn to the team experience that the Global Village program provides.  We are intimately involved with AFCA, as team leaders and as Advisory Board members.   And, as mentioned above, the Nunnery has a special place in our hearts.
